will take you non-stop to your destination at a steady 100 MPH on the SkyTran overhead freeway! A single lane of computer chauffeur driven SkyTran vehicles carries as many commuters per hour as three-lanes of surface freeway automobile traffic with no accidents, traffic jams or speeding violations.
SkyTran Offline Portals
In our concept, vehicles must always be available for one's use, in line and waiting at SkyTran Offline Portals .
Such an on-demand system means that the long accepted standard concept of a large and expensive, comfortable station for relaxing while waiting for scheduled departure also becomes totally obsolete. This further means that our modular portals can become absolute minimalist structures as shown to the left. This means very low costs. Most importantly, low costs mean more units can be deployed for a given budget.
As you can see, we plan to use the monorail guideway support poles (which also supports the weight of all the SkyTran vehicles), to also serve as the Offline Portal module's primary support structure. Using the SkyTran track support poles to serve double duty saves costs. Only in this manner can we create a minimalist structure.
We can place our guideway support poles along existing streets or into existing sidewalks. One of the goals of the SkyTran invention is to minimize surface land usage and interference with the pedestrians below and all other preexisting surface traffic.
SkyTran Offline Portals are the key to non-stop fast travel. It is a simple concept. It is the same as pulling into a gas
station to refuel your car. Once your car has exited the road and turned into the gas station, all the other adjacent automobile traffic is free to keep on going. You have done it thousands of times in your lifetime. Once you have pulled in and stopped, your car is irrelevant to all of the rest of the continuing traffic. As depicted above, the through traffic shown on the higher guideway never slows down.
SkyTran operations also has an analogy in freeway driving. When exiting a freeway you don't even start slowing down until after you exit the main freeway and are safely on the exit ramp. Similarly, for merging, one learns to already be at freeway speed before blending back into freeway traffic. It is very dangerous to join into the freeway traffic at say 30 mph and then try build up to full speed.
Besides saving time for the commuter, non-stop SkyTran through service also saves a lot of energy. Accelerating from 0 to 100 mph takes 5 to 7 times the power needed to just cruise along at a steady 100 mph!
Using a SkyTran Offline Portal
Maintaining a continuous
flow of traffic requires a pair of these modular SkyTran Offline Portals - an
unloading module and a loading module placed about 100 feet apart as shown in
this picture. This will enable us to always have an excess of vehicles on hand
in a dwell line. As one person is exiting at the back of the line another
can be boarding up front and immediately be on his way. This
eliminates waiting for one person to exit and get out of the way in order to
make room for the next to board. The two events can be happening simultaneously
in two different places.
All unloading and boarding
occurs after exiting the main
SkyTran freeway. After exiting the high speed SkyTran
freeway, the vehicle slows down rapidly on the offline guideway, descends to the
sidewalk access level and stops at the Portal. Vehicles on the main
SkyTran freeway never slow down until it is time to either make a 90 degree turn
or exit to an Offline
SkyTran Portal at their desired final
destination.
For safety reasons
our small personal size vehicles travel up in the air rather than on the
surface. This means that our system does not require the separate roadway
that all automobiles, trains, subways and light rail need - or the expense of
such Right-of-Ways. No demolition of homes, commercial or industrial
buildings, schools, etc! No special land
required.
The SkyTran Minimalist Vehicle
This photo shows the close resemblance of the SkyTran vehicle to a soaring glider cockpit. Personal sized vehicles that have a minimum of frontal area combined with very comfortable semi-reclined seating allows us to minimize the energy wasted in pushing the vehicle through the air. Clean electric powered, non-polluting, SkyTran vehicles will obtain an electrical energy efficiency equivalent of over 200 miles per gallon while traveling along in comfort at a steady 100 miles per hour.
This high, non-stop speed will make your daily commute a relaxing quick trip instead of a slow frustrating hassle each and every day!
SkyTran will be much easier to get in and out of than an automobile. First of all, when boarding at a SkyTran Offline Portal, the SkyTran seat height is ergonomically positioned to be exactly at standard chair height above the ground. Also, one will not have to lower themselves over a ridge and down into the seat as required in the typical automobile. And unlike a car, the hinged door will not be partially blocking the entryway as a person places his legs inside to sit down (or swings them out to stand up).
The SkyTran Invention
One critical aspect of the SkyTran invention:
Most mass transportation systems envisioned by others cannot easily go up or down in short distances, so optimizing travel height for the convenience of the passengers, while maintaining an essential minimum clearance above all normal surface traffic during high speed travel is impossible. An important part of the SkyTran invention is this ability to move up and down in the third dimension in a short distance.
As can be seen earlier, and to the left, it is planned to always have several two-passenger SkyTran vehicles waiting and ready at each Offline SkyTran Portal - a person just walks up, gets in and goes. No more waiting for a scheduled bus or train and no more rushing to make a bus or train's scheduled time.
Computer Chauffeur

Once boarded, a SkyTran pod becomes the passenger's private vehicle. The passenger decides exactly where they want the computer chauffeur to take them. No stopping at each and every rail station to let some people off and new people on. No more concerns about unsavory types riding along with you. A SkyTran vehicle travels overhead on a monorail freeway, safely above all other traffic and only exits this freeway to slow down and stop at your selected destination station. SkyTran is personalized Transit!
It is also important to note that your computer chauffeur will never be distracted by billboards, cell phone calls, conversation, reaching over to change music stations, etc. Nor will your chauffeur ever be driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
